The Washington Arts Commission (ArtsWA) has announced a Certified Creative District in Anacortes. The Anacortes Creative District is located in the heart of Fidalgo Island nestled between the San Juan Islands, Seattle, WA, and Vancouver, BC.

As a part of a Washington State Designation program, Anacortes joins communities all over the state in celebrating creativity. The Creative District program provides a platform to expand its arts and creative economies, attract entrepreneuers, educational and cultural opportunities, and ongoing economic growth. With this designation, ArtsWA has developed a comprehensive program that offers grant funding options, technical assistance and training for communities and artist entrepreneurs, wayfinding signage, and more to help communities thrive. The Anacortes Creative District will be administered by the Anacortes Arts Festival.

The Anacortes Creative District is a defined area where art, cultural, social, and economic activity flourishes. Cultural spaces, artists, creative sectors, and other local businesses that support these activities are all included. This special designation promotes Anacortes (and all of Fidalgo Island) as a vibrant and thriving arts community as it inspires neighbors, other Washingtonians, and visitors from all over the world to visit this incredible destination.

Anacortes is bursting with amazing collaborations, which creates unlimited opportunities for its community and visitors to this beautiful seaside city. Nonprofits such as Anacortes Arts Festival, Fidalgo DanceWorks, Anacortes Community Theatre, Anacortes Music Project, and Manieri Foundation are among the Creative Collaborators. In partnership with the City of Anacortes and together with the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, the Port of Anacortes, the Anacortes School District, the Downtown Anacortes Alliance, Skagit Tourism, and Skagit County Economic Development, the avenues for support are boundless.

It is the dedication of these collaborators and community members supporting the mission of the Anacortes Creative District as a place that honors its rich art history and builds on that history by growing the opportunities for creative people and businesses to live and work in Anacortes.

Festival Fine Art

This will be our last year of using the Port Transit Shed for our fine art show.   To make our final year a worthy celebration, our Focus Gallery theme “A Place of Belonging”,  will showcase thirteen prominent Anacortes artists.  Our Festival Curatorial Team selected the Juried Show that features another 82 regional artists.   The show opens on Saturday, July 29.   Fine art awards total over $7,000 and include a new Susan Parke Innovation Award to honor our longtime colleague and friend.

Festival Poster Image

This years poster image is a watercolor by booth artisan Elizabeth Person.  The image created specifically for the Festival shows a calm water view with sailboat, mountains – and rising moon at sunset.   Elizabeth  hails from Everett and is one of our popular illustrator/map makers.  Her work is educational but fun.   You can find her in the center of the 300 block during the Festival.  T-shirts with the design will be on sale in our Information booth at 5th Street.   She did a sister image for cloth bags, wine glasses and coffee cups – also for sale.

Ready, Set…GO

After a year’s worth of planning, this years Festival is back in force.  We’re bringing back the Waterfront Pub and Port Stage down on Port dock at the north end of Commercial (Saturdays lineup will be all local musicians).   25% new Booth Artisans will bring some current twists on art and craft.   More artist groups in the Working Studios will create more excitement.  The popular sandbox is back in the youth area.  Great music, good food, refreshing beverages in our beer & wine gardens, a wonderful fine art show at the Port…we hope you’ll join us and find your creative pleasure.

We’re a No-DOG zone

One of the biggest complaints we get every year are the presence of dogs.   There are so many reasons dogs don’t belong at the Festival…

Hot black streets can burn your dogs feet
Dogs get thirsty & sometimes overwhelmed with crowds
There are children in strollers at eye level with dogs
Even the best dogs pee & poop (and not all owners clean it up)
Multiple dogs often feel the need to communicate or show their dominance
Leashes can tangle around peoples’ legs or trip them
Dogs have been known to urinate in artist booths

Yes, these are are real reasons!  We’re not anti-dog, but please leave Fido at home (unless it’s a legitimate service dog)!
